This post has nothing to do with various transfer rumours floating about, it's just a fun exercise in analysing players who could be available at knockdown prices from the 3 relegated clubs in the PL, with a couple from elsewhere in Europe. Let me know your thoughts on any of the below or any other options I chose not to discuss and how they might or might not fit into our squad. Norwich City Norwich earned plaudits after gaining promotion with a team containing a few promising academy products. If those young players choose to continue their development at Norwich and they can keep the core of their team together they could do what Burnley have done in recent seasons by coming straight back up and securing some form of stability for a few seasons.
Max Aarons – After a great season in the Championship, Aarons has the makings of a top PL full back. Still only 20 and will demand a big fee, Spurs and Bayern are among interested parties. Played in all but 2 of Norwich's PL games, registering 2 assists and creating 7 'big' chances in a team who only scored 26 goals. RB is a position that there has been some talk of creating depth and for this Aarons could be a solid signing, but he will want first team football and United may prefer to keep Dalot/TFM and hedge their bets on Ethan Laird's development or instead bring in more experienced cover.
Ben Godfrey – CB is a position which has been highlighted as key for United to strengthen in this window. Jones, Rojo and Smalling look out the door while Bailly and Tuanzebe have had injury issues. Despite Norwich's woeful season, Ben Godfrey has came out with some credit. At 22 this campaign will have given him a good education in PL defending. Maguire, Robertson and Wan-Bissaka are good examples of how playing in a weaker team can aid a defender's development. Dortmund and Leipzig are among suitors with a reported asking price of £50m potentially ruling United out of the running.
Jamal Lewis – An often underrated member of Norwich's squad this season, Lewis has had a solid if unspectacular campaign. Question marks as to whether his ceiling is higher than Brandon Williams, and once again he may prefer to stay at Norwich and start every week.
Todd Cantwell – Registered 6 goals and 2 assists in a promising showing for the 22 year old. A big reported target for Spurs and Sheffield United with the ability to play on either flank as well as centrally. May not want to come to sit on the bench but could be a cut-price option to replace Lingard or Pereira.
Watford After reaching an FA Cup Final last season, only to be demolished 6-0 by Man City, Watford seem to have been scarred by the experience. An 8-0 loss at the Etihad in September was followed up by a 4-0 loss which set them up for relegation. A club with trigger happy owners, they have gone through 6 permanent managers during their 5 season stay in the Premier League.
Gerard Deulofeu – A player who has shown flashes of brilliance during his time at Everton and Watford, Deulofeu is still only 26 and will be keen to make something of his career after a disappointing and short-lived return to Barcelona a few years ago. Had a great 2018-19 season chipping in with 10 goals and 5 assists. Scored 4 an assisted 5 this season but had his season ended by a ruptured ACL in Watford's 3-0 win over Liverpool. Like Cantwell, Deulofeu can play across the front line and offers something different to our other options. Talk of a move to AC Milan or Valencia is on the cards with an exit to Europe seeming more likely than a move to another PL club.
Abdoulaye Doucouré – A standout performer for Watford in recent seasons, Doucouré was likened to Patrick Vieira as a young midfielder. Now at 27, it is clear that his ceiling is lower than that but he is still a tidy player and a solid midfield presence in the PL. Reported interest from PSG, United and Chelsea in the past year came to nothing, while a reported bid of £36m by Everton was rejected. Has spoken of his desire to play at a higher level and has stated that he wants to remain in the PL.
Ismaila Sarr – The 22 year old showed promise in the second half the season before lockdown. Has been linked with a move to Liverpool while some Arsenal fans have been calling on their club to make a bid. Rated around £30m, a move seems pointless for United if they want to upgrade the Right Wing, with Greenwood and James providing equal or better options and Sancho being several levels above.
Troy Deeney – Mr Watford. Deeney is a leader and while he just turned 32, he is keen to show that he still has something to offer at this level. Managed 10 goals this season but offers something more than goalscoring. Has a fascinating story and could be a real addition behind the scenes. A demanding player with lots of cojones, he may not have what it takes to be an option of the bench for United and isn't as polished in front of a camera as the PR folk would like. Deeney has been a rumoured target for Burnley and will hope to see out his twilight years by adding to his tally of 47 Premier League goals.
Danny Welbeck – Scored 2 goals post-lockdown and managed an assist as Watford failed to beat the drop, DWelbz is a great option to bring in as a back-up striker. Imagine the hashtag #Welback and you will be surely sold on the return of the Manchester native and Red's academy product. Or not.
Bournemouth After failing to fix their defensive frailties, Bournemouth have instead blamed their relegation on Hawkeye not working in Sheffield United vs Aston Villa. Eddie Howe has earned plaudits for taking the club from League Two to the Premier League and surviving for 5 seasons with a smaller club with a small stadium and limited resources. Bournemouth have played some good football and earned some great results during their time in the PL, putting up the best fight to beat the drop post-lockdown of the 3 relegated clubs.
Ryan Fraser – Fraser left the club as a free agent, after heavy interest from Arsenal last season did not materialise into a move. He rejected a short term extension and seems keen to kick on. The Arsenal interest seems to have distracted him with this season with 7 goals and 14 assists in 2018-19 dropping to 1 goal and 4 assists this term. Can play on either wing but prefers the left. Interest from Arsenal and Liverpool appears to have dropped off along with his form. A move to Crystal Palace seems likely, especially if Zaha leaves.
Nathan Aké – After Ole chatted with Aké on the pitch after United's win against Bournemouth last month, the rumour mill has started churning. As mentioned previously, CB is a position United need to build depth and he 25 year old will be keen to remain in one of Europe's top 5 leagues with Euro 2021 on the horizon. Nathan Aké appears to be a more realistic target for United, with City and Chelsea also hovering. The defender is reported to not have a relegation clause reducing his wages so Bournemouth may need to let him go to balance the books, especially given the financial pressures created by Coronavirus. A player with some potential to still reach and proven PL experience, Aké is quick and agile which has been touted as a good match for Maguire's qualities.
David Brooks – Brooks has emerged as another target for Spurs. After a great first season in the PL, Brooks missed most of this season due to injury and Bournemouth missed his creativity and ability to find space. The player has just turned 23 and could prove a good replacement for Lingard or Pereira, if other targets prove too expensive or aren't available.
Josh King – United wanted King in January but were put off by Bournemouth's reported £30m price tag. King managed 2 appearances during his time at United, neither in the PL and was reportedly devastated when the January move fell through. At 28 he does not fit the brief of young promising talent, but his flexibility, proven PL quality and being an academy product may count in his favour. Has spent the same amount of time in the PL as Anthony Martial, scoring 48 goals and providing 15 assists in 161 games compared to Martial's 51 goals and 25 assists in 145 games. King could well make the move to United this summer and at a fee significantly less than the £30m demanded by Bournemouth in January.
Callum Wilson – Wilson has been Bournemouth's true success story in the PL, scoring more goals each year until last season's total of 14 dropped to a disappointing 7 this time around. At 28 he is once again a target for Spurs with the current fee being reported at around £10m. As a backup striker, he might prove a cheaper option than keeping Ighalo but may wish to move to a club where he can play more minutes and find a way into the England squad for Euro 2021.
Other players from relegated clubs in Europe
Marc Roca (Espanyol) – Linked with a €15m move to AC Milan and rumoured interest from Real Madrid and Arsenal with previous interest from Bayern. Standing over 6ft, the 23 year old may have been a decent long-term replacement for Matic. Solid defensively and a good passing range, he seems the kind of player who United have craved in recent seasons to release Pogba forwards as well as having the ability to launch accurate long balls to United's pacy forwards which would prove especially useful on counterattacks.
Sandro Tonali (Brescia) – Serie A still has 2 rounds left to play, but Brescia are already confirmed as going down. Tonali has been a bright light for Brescia this season, providing 7 assists from a deep midfield role as well as making 3 appearances for Italy. The 20 year old is a physical presence in midfield and his ability to read to game has drawn comparisons with the great Andrea Pirlo and spiked interest from Serie A's big guns. AC & Inter appear set to battle it out for his signature in deals around €30-40m while Tonali has also been linked with Juventus and Liverpool where he would certainly be a great long-term upgrade on Jordan Henderson. As with most wonderkids, there have also been various reports of interest from pretty much every major European club, including United.

So, how difficult is it to bounce back from relegation from the Premier League? I picked around a little bit in historical trends [OC]
As the new season gets underway, there's no lack of predictions being thrown around. While we all know that Manchester City are winning the Premier League again and Liverpool are getting relegated because they haven't spent any money only spent £11m on a backup fullback, what of those unlucky few who were banished to the netherworld that is the Championship? Around the internet, there does seem to be a consensus that Bournemouth, Norwich, and Watford are all among the favorites to come right back up, whether this is coming from Scottish Teensbetting markets or "journalists" like 538. I’m not here to litigate the validity of 538’s modelling process for soccer outcomes, though I’ll admit I enjoy reading them every now and then. What spurred me to do this is seeing just how much all three of the freshly-relegated sides are pretty heavy favorites in their model, with only Brentford coming close. So, I was curious how long it usually has taken teams since football started since 1992 (as a convenient cut-off spot). I’m sure the information did exist somewhere in a moderately-accessible format, but I was sitting around waiting for people to reply to my emails so I thought I’d just go ahead and build the following list of relegated teams in chronological order:

* In 1995, the PL went from 22 teams to 20, and so they relegated 4 teams. In other years, Palace would have survived. I think.
The first two columns are pretty self-explanatory, it’s the year in which the club got relegated (pulled from Wikipedia). The next one is how many years a team was outside of the top flight, with 1 meaning they were promoted the very next year, 2 meaning they were promoted after their second year, and so on. For clubs who to this point have not managed to get promoted back to the PL, this third column is the minimum amount of time they’ll spend in outside of the PL. So for example, Stoke was relegated in 2018 so they’ve got a 3 because at a bare minimum they’ll take 3 years outside of the top flight if hell freezes over they manage promotion this year (sorry Stoke, you’ve actually got a decent shot tbf). For teams lower than that, a la Charlton who are currently in League One, this number assumes back-to-back promotions, as unlikely as that is. Not a perfect system, I know. For Wimbledon, I’m considering AFC Wimbledon the continuation of Wimbledon FC, because fuck MK Dons. So what’s the data look like? Here’s the distribution of how long it has taken teams to return:

Across 82 instances of relegation, 45 separate teams have suffered the sting of relegation. The median time between relegation and promotion is 4 years and average is 6.75, though obviously these are moving targets because a lot of these teams haven’t been back yet and some may very well never be back.
On 21 occasions, a relegated team has come right back up the following year. Birmingham City, Leicester, Newcastle, and West Brom have all achieved this feat twice, and no one has ever done it more than twice. Sunderland and West Brom have each managed bouncing back after two years twice, and Sheffield United interestingly enough took 12 years to get back both times that they’ve been relegated.
In ’93, ’97, ’06, ’09, and ’15, two teams that went down came right back up. There has never been a year when each team relegated from the PL managed promotion immediately. Most years do have at least one club come back within 1 or 2 years. The year with the longest gap is 1994 at 12 years for, you guessed it, Sheffield United. The other two clubs relegated that year are Oldham and Swindon, both of whom don’t look like they’ll be rejoining the top flight any time soon. The next-largest gap is 8 years, with Watford, Charlton, and once again Sheffield United being relegated in 2007. Watford made it back to the PL in 2015.
1994 was definitely the toughest year for the relegated teams, with other notably difficult years for re-promotion being 2000:

The strongest relegation groups (at least in so far as how long it took them to return) were in ’93, ’97, and ’06. Each of these had two teams bounce right back up with the third in each group taking one more year. Honorable mention to 2003 when West Brom came right back up and Sunderland and West Ham managed the feat in 2 years apiece.
To bring it full-circle, it seems to me like models like 538 may be slightly overestimating the likelihood that multiple of the relegated sides make it back, but the better takeaway from their predictions is probably that it's highly likely at least one of the teams makes it back, which did happen in roughly 60% of years I looked at here. I personally can't see Bournemouth bouncing back given their "off-season", but who knows. Certainly not me. All this data is sitting in an excel sheet on my computer now, and I successfully killed an afternoon-ish of my time. If anyone has any other little factoids they're wondering about, let me know and I'll happily jump back in.
I am quite focused on trying to find MATCHES that result in DRAW to place a 8-match accumulator bet accurately at some point. Here’s all the draw matches I found since 23th October
Eventually I want to make a 8-match accumulator bet. 4 of the matches I will select either DRAW or HANDICAP HDA and pick -1 for the superior team with the hope that they still win. And the remaining 4 matches of my choice I will select both of DRAW and Handicap -1 (so if results end up with 2:1, 3:2, 4:3, etc it’s a loss) Here are the DRAW matches I have written down on my [Translation] Which La Liga club fits each Premier League team?
Good morning lads and lassies of soccer. To celebrate that the Bundesliga finally comes back I bring you the transcripton/translation of a pretty interesting video I had watched some time ago, related (and literally titled) "Which La Liga team fits each team of the Premier League?" Now, I know the issue about fans that have simpathy for "second" teams is polarizing and as we all know after last year, it can become something completely vomitive, but this video is indeed trying to give fans of Spanish clubs reasons to like a particular English club, and with that said, tbh I believe at the end of the day most fans, plastic or not, do feel at least some simpathy for some clubs above others excluding their own. From the small town fan who supports their local club but also the "big" team that challenges for the league in the top division, to the Ultra that hates every club of their country that isn't his but do likes a foreign club of which he befriended their respective Ultras in the past, I'm pretty sure that most football fans do feel at least a bit of simpathy for some particular club of a foreign league. But well, that discussion shouldn't be the topic of this. The fact is that these Spaniards of the video do like particular English clubs and to guide other similar Spaniards analyzed the situation and created this "guidebook" about which Premier League club "currently" fits each La Liga club, and that is what will be shown here. With a last emphasis in the "currently", there's nothing else to say as preview. Just remember that these aren't my opinions and I'm only sharing what they decided.
Both have pretty big stadiums with almost the same capacity (52k and 53k respectively) that also coincidentally are in the center of their respectives cities, something that is laudable in these modern times where stadiums are being designed to be in the outskirts, and not few clubs are forced to traslate them from their original places because of the economical advantages.
And another thing that united them is that they are one of the few historical rich clubs that doesn't have a derby rival in their city. So, if you're born in Bilbao you better fucking support Athletic and there is no room for debate about it, and something similar happens in Newcastle. And in the same way, the derby that the clubs have actually have (Sunderland and Real Sociedad) goes beyond football and is a derby between the whole cities.
They faced each other in the 94/95 UEFA Cup Round of 16 and what highlights it was that it was an epic clash that ended in a global 3-3 draw where Athletic won thanks to away goals, and that in the second leg had a pitch invasion from Basque fans that after celebrating with their team, went to laud the away stand, as the English visitors had been great and even cheered for Athletic after the end of the match, thing that a lot of old fans from both clubs would remember forever.
That match would be so iconic for some that Rob Lee, one of the best Newcastle players of the last decades, would require his farewell match for the Geordie team to be... against Athletic. And such wish was granted.
Crystal Palace & Getafe
Both are clubs from the south of the metropolitan areas of the capital of their countries. Selhurst for London and Getafe for Madrid respectively.
Both are managed by tacticians with a similar ethos: Bordalás and Hodgson. The parallels of both teams are easily spotted when you watch both teams: strong rigid defenders, fast strikers, sitting back and counterattacks, the whole 4-4-fucking-2 package, et al.
Vicente Guaita played for both teams, and in fact was directly tranferred from Madrid to London.
Both have blue as their main colour,
Liverpool & Real Madrid
Both are the Europeanroyalty of their respective leagues. Real Madrid is just the most successful in history and nobody comes close, while Liverpool has the double of Champions Leagues than the second most succesful English team and only Milan between them and Real.
Both stand out for their mentality and comebacks. Istanbul and Lisbon, for example, are among the most dramatic Champions League finals in the whole history. One team comeback from a 3-0 in the first half, the other tied and later won a match that they were losing until the 90'+3.
Xabi Alonso, Steve McManaman, Alvaro Arbeloa, Dudek, Antonio Núñez, Rafa Benitez, Michael Owen, Fernando Morientes and the greatest of all, Nuri Sahin, served in both clubs.
Both stand out for being the best teams of the 20th century in their countries by far, which nevertheless suffered many years of drought after the golden years until they eventually achieved an epic again, being Mijatovic's goal and the penalty saved by Dudek, the final actions that crowned them for the first time in decades as European champions for the seventh and fifth time, respectively.
Norwich & Valladolid
Both won the league cup of their countries in the same years (84/85).
Both highlight for the atypical colour of their kits (violet and yellow/green).
Both are the biggest teams of relatively isolated counties.
Mohammed Salisu plays for Valladolid and has been linked to Norwich.
Bournemouth & Eibar
The two smallest stadiums of each league. Dean Court has a capacity of barely above 11,000 in a league where the average is above 40k, while the Municipal de Ipurua has only... 8164 seats.
Likewise, both are clubs from pretty small cities that almost nobody would know if it wasn't for their football teams. Lets just say that Eibar isn't exactly in the same tier of the other Basque cities like Bilbao, San Sebastian or Pamplona, while Bournemouth only has 190k inhabitants and was founded as recently as the 19th century, something strange for English standards.
And finally and ringing the same bells, they are two small teams that were promoted to the top tier for the first time ever in recent years (2014-15) to the first division, and that also coincidentally, have never descended from that time despite their (lack) of historical status.
Burnley & Alaves
Both are extremely physical and defensive teams that also highlight for their lack of possesion (the lowest and second lowest of their leagues respectively).
Turf Moor and the Estadio de Mendizorroza have almost exactly the same capacity (20k).
Both are clubs with over a century of history, however, both are currently united by their quick promotions of recent years. Few clubs do it each season, but those who climb two divisions practically in-a-row, even less.
The English club was in the third tier of the English pyramid from 2013 to 2017, after which they won the promotion to the Championship after becoming champions with 100 points. After that, they finished 10th in their first season there, just to assure the promotion in dramatic tones after Leeds implosion in the late stages of the 18/19 season.
Meanwhile the island club was even more epic in their promotions. After failing to Segunda B (the third tier of Spanish football) for the first time in 40 years, they fired everybody but 4 players, but still were able to win their local group of the division and later compete in the final play-offs that gave the promotion spots, and in that they first assured a promotion spot and later become champions of the division. And then? they arrived to the Second Division with the hopes of not being relegated, but overperformed and in an epic way assured the last position that gave a spot to the play-off for the final promotion spot, and despite losing 2-0 in the first leg of the final, the won 3-0 the second leg and completed their return from the Third Division to La Liga in the fastest possible way.
Finally but not less important, both have red in their kits.
Brighton & Levante
Both are small clubs from coastal towns.
Both won the promotion from the second division in 16/17.
Brighton logo shows a seagull and they're known as such.
Levante's coast has a record for having the biggest number of a certain breed of seagulls in the whole world.
Leicester & Villarreal
Both are clubs that are relatively small when it comes to historical status... and for the same reason both were part of some of the best underdogs stories of the world in recent decades.
Villarreal, the Yellow Submarine, comes from a small Valencian city of around 50k, and despite having a history of almost a century, they never reached the top division until 1998, just to be relegated in the same year. But they didn't gave up and came back to La Liga as quickly, and this time they stayed, and in what a way! Pellegrini's Villarreal spearheaded by Román Riquelme and Diego Forlán surprised Europa by ending third in La Liga just behind the Galacticos and Ronaldinho's Barca and won the right to play the 2005/06 Champions League, in what would end being their greatest moment in history so far by eventually reaching semifinals and barely losing the chance of playing the final in their first season thanks to some cursed penalties against the Arsene Wenger club. Even in defeat, the history that they made was epic as few others.
But one that actually was it even more was what Leicester did exactly 10 years later in the Premiership. From barely avoiding being relegated to win the whole league was a FIFA Career-esque story, and for the same it will be remembered forever.
And finally, what made even more iconic both legendary performances was the charisma of some of their players. Vardy, Forlán, Riquelme more precisely.
Southampton & Leganés
Southampton are called the Saints and their stadium is named St Mary's.
Leganes' stadium is called after a religious figure (Virgen de Butarque).
The Pozzo family: originally known from being the owners of Udinese in the Serie A, eventually the Italian family diversified their investments, first buying the small Spanish team in 2009, and later the English one in 2012. Because of financial reasons they sold their participation in Granada in the late 2016, aye, however, there was a timelapse that lasted years were both clubs where effectively in the same hands.
And for the same reasons, a number of players have been "property" of both clubs. Isaac Success and Adalberto Peñaranda the most iconic of them.
Chelsea & Atletico Madrid
Both are pretty big clubs in the capital but that have lived in the shadow of their historically bigger neighbour for more time than not, a certain Arsenal and Real Madrid respectively.
An impressive number of illustrious names have passed through both teams, and not few times from one to the other and even in some times back again: Fernando Torres, Diego Costa, Filipe Luis, Thibaut Courtois, Mateja Keman, Tiago Mendes, Maniche, Radamel Falcao, Jesper Grönkjaer, Hasselbaink, Morata, and more.
Both suffered for tragic defeats in the Champions League final, Chelsea in 2008, Atleti in 2014 (and 2016). One team had their captain slip and missed the crucial penalty, the other ended losing a final that was winning until the 90'+3. Coincidentally, all those finals were between teams from the same country.
Tottenham & Sevilla
Both have white jerseys.
Both were managed in recent years by Juande Ramos.
Both are famous because of their fierce rivalry with a neighbour, that makes them part of one of the most iconic derbies in their country.
Both are clubs that have a long history and that in recent years have had a pretty great period, but still weren't able to truly displace or replace the historically bigger clubs from their place.
Both are of the biggest clubs with the biggest fanbases of their country, and both are currently underperforming when you see their historical status, which enrages such fans.
Both have some of the worse owners that a big club that want sportive instead of just financial success could have, and that are one of the main causes of their decline in recent years: the Glazers and Peter Lim.
And fanbases of both clubs also hate the right-hand of their owners that is the most direct responsible of the sportive issues of their clubs: Anil Murthy and Ed Woodward.
Both are proud clubs with an illustrious history despite being the smaller club compared to their more famous neightbours, and also are clubs that these days suffer more time than not.
Both had their peak in the 80's, with Everton two leagues and one cup, exactly the same numbers than la Real. That decade would also be the last one when they had any major success, with Sociedad only being able to say that they ended second in the 02-03 La Liga and the Toffees with that they won a FA Cup in 95'.
Also of the first stages of the changes after the arrival of the Sheikh was the creation of a sports city for young players, imitating la Masia, probably the second most famous thing of the Spanish club.
And another was the bet for a female team, in what now both are powers, unlike their historical rivals that are shamefully far behind them on it despite their historical status.
Also beyond Pep there are other people that both clubs share: Ferran Soriano and Txiki Begiristain, financial director and sports director respectively of both teams in the past and now.
Claudio Bravo played for both, although with different kind of performances.
And finally, not a few Barcelona fans today complain that the closest thing to the Barca that touched the sky today is Manchester City.
West Ham & Espanyol
Both are clubs of a big city where there are bigger teams. West Ham is arguably the 4th biggest London club these days after Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham, while Espanyol are the second biggest but loyalist club of Barcelona, where there is a certain secessionist bigger Catalan club.
Both are clubs that have been almost all their history in the top division and yet have never won it. Likewise, both had their peaks and almost did it in the 80s, where both ended 3rd, in almost the same year (86' and 87').
Both were clubs that had an old stadium as traditional as loved (Estadi de Sarrià and the Upton Park) that were eventually replaced by stadiums built by the city for the Olympics (Espanyol eventually left his one though).
Both have never being relegated to the third division of their countries despite being some of the oldest clubs around.
Both are the club with most Mexicans of their league, Raul Jimenez vs Diego Lainez plus Andres Guardado respectively, what makes their teams far more popular than what they should in the CONCACAF giant.
Joey Guðjónsson and Alfred N'Diaye played for both clubs.
Six Portuguese have played for Betis in this century. Six Portuguese play for Wolves this season.
They played a friendly last year.
Aston Villa & Celta de Vigo
Both are related to the sky-blue colour.
Both clubs are characterized for having a player that is almost a demigod for the fans and club overall: Jack Grealish and Iago Aspas.
Those demigods are local players who have been fans of their club since they were children, and love them so much that played for them even in the second division.
I created a 90% confidence interval using the mean and standard deviation of players scores throughout the whole season. That's where the Proj (low) and Proj (high) come from.
The Proj (high) and Proj (low) are just the upper and lower bounds of the confidence interval formula. CI Formula: Mean +/- ( t-score * (STD/sqrt(#games))
To get the specific weekly projection, I use fixture difficulty as a scalar. So for a fixture difficulty of 5 (MCI, LIV), the weekly projection is only 10% above the player’s projected low. Conversely, for a fixture difficulty of 1 (NOR), the weekly projection is 90% above the projected low (or 10% below the projected high).
The GW 37+ column (the projections) are colorized based on fixture difficulty. The colors in that column only: dark green dark red corresponds to 1 5 fixture difficulty.
These projections are far from perfect. I try my best to give raw statistics without any weighted or biased equations. I write out my formula so that everyone understands how these numbers are obtained and the notes I add are to help point out where the deficiencies lie in my projections. If something looks off and I didn't address, please don't hesitate to ask!
Forward Notes
Marcus Rashford's results on the pitch are finally mirroring his excellent peripheral stats. Since the restart, Rashford has an xG of 4.27 (5th among all) and an xA of 2.22 (8th among all) so it was nice to see his good chances translate to points. With West Ham's win over Watford yesterday, the Hammers seem to have escaped relegation this season and may be more prone to rolling over to a United team with everything to play for before their clash against Leicester.
Jamie Vardy put on a playmaking masterclass in their last game against Sheffield and was truly unlucky to have picked up only one assist. In just that game alone, Vardy accrued an xG of 0.79 and a whopping xA of 1.91. He faces Tottenham this week in a must win game. He can always easily grab a goal, but I think against Mourinho his ceiling is limited in what could be a low scoring game.
I've been impressed with how Southampton have been playing since the restart, ranking 4th in shots per game (14.3), 5th in shots on target per game (5.4), and 7th in xG (1.57). I think Danny Ings is an excellent choice this week and may even be a differential option for captaincy. Bournemouth likely won't be parking the way they had been the past 4 weeks against top clubs as they are fighting to escape relegation. I expect them to play more aggressively and attack-minded like they did against Crystal Palace and Newcastle earlier on.
Aubameyang is a great option for this week as well as the next (Watford @ Home). He also received his rest last gameweek and even with the FA Cup game looming, I am confident that Auba starts both of the remaining Premier League games and likely plays around 90 minutes in each as he chases Vardy for the Golden Boot. Aston Villa has been a very tough opponent since the restart and they won't fold easily with everything to play for.
Chris Wood is the big sleeper pick this week against Norwich. Wood has recorded an xG of 16.27 throughout the entirety of the season which is greater than the aforementioned Ings and Aubameyang. Norwich are embarrassingly bad against strikers, and with Wood on penalties as well as a good threat on set pieces, he is a strong bet to score a goal and maybe more.
Midfielder Notes
Manchester City play in the FA cup today which means record levels of fraudulence should be expected against Watford. There's no sense in trying to tie any real logic to him, but nevertheless we try. We can expect The Fraud to start his strongest XI against Arsenal today (Walker, Garcia, Laporte, Mendy, Dilva, Rodri, KDB, Mahrez, Jesus, Sterling). This leads me to believe that if DavidSilva starts in the FA Cup semi-final, he will be benched against Watford (maybe for Foden) and start in his final game for the club against Norwich. I think Mahrez received his rest last week and should be fit to start in the FA Cup as well as the last two Premier League fixtures, though he will likely be subbed at 60 minutes for both. De Bruyne and Sterling are a little tougher to predict since City have Champions League on August 7th and potentially an FA Cup Final on August 1st. However, Kevin is chasing the 20 assist record and Sterling may still make a push for the Golden Boot. It is important to note that in their last two matches, City have beaten Watford 14-0 aggregate.
Liverpool attackers Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah should have a strong gameweek against a poor Chelsea defense. I expect this to be a game of end-to-end football and predict around 4 goals total in this match. Salah looks like the hungrier of the two forwards to score and he'll need at least a brace this game in order to have a chance to catch Vardy in the race for the Golden Boot.
Michael Antonio has been the most in-form attacker since the restart, leading the league with a whopping 6.33 xG while also carrying a respectable 1.86 xA (11th in the league) in that timespan. West Ham don't have a whole lot to play for, so maybe a Hammers fan could let us know what the chances are of him being benched for Haller. However should he continue starting at striker, I think he has a good chance to score on the counter against a Manchester United back line that hasn't always been the most cohesive. If Luke Shaw misses another game, United may face trouble in stopping that Bowen-Antonio connection from the right.
Bruno Fernandes has consistently been atop my projections but I think Anthony Martial is right there with him this week. West Ham are among the worst defenses in the league and won't park the bus as strongly as a team like Brighton does. Thus, I think there will be plenty of space for Martial to get in behind for easy opportunities, as he has been doing so well at home since the restart.
Defender Notes
Doherty has finally overtaken Boly in the projections and all it cost was everything. On the bright side, I don't have to keep explaining Boly's slightly inflated projections due to his great clean sheet record (11 cleans in 20 games). I think Wolves are a good shout for a clean sheet this week against an anemic Crystal Palace attack that may be without Patrick Van Aanholt this game.
I would be surprised if either Liverpool or Chelsea kept a clean sheet this week, but Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andy Robertson are still strong bets for an attacking return. Marcos Alonso falls into this same boat, however he has rotation risk with Reece James behind him and Liverpool are more likely to score 2 goals than Chelsea are which increases his chance for a -1 point deduction.
Matt Ritchie scored a banger of a goal last week against Spurs and showed why he is one of the best attacking players, much less defenders, on the team. Newcastle have been statistically the worst defensive team in the league since the restart (0.23 xCS)so it's hard to rely on a clean sheet this game, but I think Ritchie will have the opportunity for plenty of attempted assists and even a shot or two.
Burnley defenders should have one of their easier games of the restart today against Norwich, who are statistically the worst attack in the league at a mind-numbing 0.52 xG since the restart. James Tarkowski has been the best and most consistent defender in FPL since the restart and has an excellent chance at an assist + a return today. I don't think Norwich will sit as far back as they did against Chelsea so the game should be more open. I hear that Charlie Taylor may not be fit for the match, but I like any Burnley defender such as Pieters or Bardsley around that projection of 4 pts, with my preference on the former.
Don't start Manchester City defenders unless for some reason you have John Stones or Nicolas Otamendi.
Sheffield United have fallen a bit from the strong, consistent defense they had been prior to the restart. However, it cannot be understated how bad of a midfield Everton are trotting out at the moment. I think this could be a game where Sheffield dominate possession and so a clean sheet is not out of the question at all. Enda Stevens has a tendency to get near the byline and send dangerous ground crosses into the center of the box; I like him the most out of Sheffield United defenders this week.
As always, I hope this information is helpful to you guys. I've learned a great deal about FPL from this sub in just under two years and I want to help others succeed to the best of my ability. Cheers and green arrows for all!

Although they are considered one of the candidates for the promotion playoffs, Derby County cannot be content with their start. Their poor finish cost them the place in the playoffs last season, and the home side didn’t improve anything. The Rams eliminated Barrow from the EFL Cup only after the penalty shootout, and they tied four defeats in the next four games in all competition. The hosts finally booked their first points thanks to a narrow 1:0 victory away to Norwich. Phillip Cocu’s side has lots of troubles with converting their chances into goals, as the hosts scored only two times. On the other hand, the home side needs to tighten up its defense, which allowed two goals per match on average so far. Derby County needs to improve a lot if they want to challenge one of the top six spots. Watford sits in seventh place on the table, and the visitors are five points behind the top two. Troy Deeney and the lads want to bounce back to the Premier League after being relegated last season, and they are on the right track to accomplishing their goals. The Hornets suffered their first defeat in the campaign against the top-placed reading in the latest round. Vladimir Ivic’s side plays very disciplined football. Although Watford managed to find the back of the oppositions’ net just twice so far, they conceded only one goal. The away side wants to get back on the winning track, although a tough challenge is ahead of them.
Full-Time Winner Odds & Prediction
Derby county still has lots of troubles in their game, and Watford should be capable of capitalizing on them. We believe the visitors can get back home with all three points in their pockets.
Goals Market Prediction
Although the visitors have been involved in very low scoring matches so far, clashes between these two teams have been fascinating lately. In the last seven occasions, both teams scored, and all games went over 2.5 margin. We expect to see at least three goals once again.
